Northern Barred Owl : Rare photo op

Although barred owls themselves are quite common (frequently heard calling to one another at night), seeing one in daylight—let alone getting a lens on one—is uncommon in my project zone. In the 5-plus years I've carried cameras on walks, I've had only 3 sightings, all in winter 2012.

Pileated Woodpecker : Rare photo op

The pileated woodpecker is impressive in size and appearance, and also hard to get a camera on. I chased a pair around the woods for an hour before getting a brief chance to get a shot. They spend much of their time in large mature (oak) trees and are constantly on the move. Their presence is apparent by their loud call (and my elevated heart rate). When they're hammering on a decayed tree, it sounds like a construction zone.
